About Long Beach, California

One of more than half a dozen U. S. cities with the same name, California's Long Beach is a city of almost 500,000 inhabitants, home to one of the world's busiest and largest sea ports. According to the U. S. Census, Long Beach is the United States' most ethnically-diverse large city, with Cambodians, African-Americans, Mexicans, Salvadorians and other Central Americans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Samoans and many other nationalities among its residents. Long Beach is located 20 miles south of downtown LA.

The Aquarium of the Pacific on the Long Beach waterfront is home to more than 12,500 animals that inhabit the Pacific Ocean. The Queen Mary, a 1920s super-liner docked in Long Beach since 1968 offers a chance to see its historic interior on ship tours. They also offer special tours of areas said to be haunted. The Russian Scorpion Submarine nestled next to the giant ship is also of interest. Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose airplane, once housed near the Queen Mary was moved to Oregon in 1992. A short water taxi ride away, Shoreline Village is also a popular shopping, entertainment and dining complex.

The annual Long Beach Grand Prix car race is the city's largest and most popular event. There is also the annual Catalina Ski race, which is also an international event. Another annual event is the CSULB Wide Screen Film Festival hosted by Long Beach State.

Don’t forget the beach when visiting. The beach can be enjoyed by foot, by boat, jet ski or kayak. There is also fishing excursions leaving the pier daily. Don’t fish, then go on a whale watching tour!
