The Queen Mary: a richly historic experience

Sep 4, 2009

The Queen Mary, a retired ocean liner with a history rich in accomplishment, patronage and triumph exceeded industry standards as she sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 until 1967. Built at the John Brown shipyard on the Clyde, Scotland, in 1937, the Queen Mary holds the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing.

For more than three years, she carried the rich and famous across the Atlantic in luxury. Then, during World War II, she served our country by carrying troops, war brides and children. Ultimately, returning to service as a transatlantic cruise ship.

The Queen Mary made her 516th and final voyage to Long Beach, California on December 9, 1967. She now rests in the Long Beach harbor and has been converted into a hotel and tourist attraction.

Today, self-guided Shipwalk tours allow visitors to explore the 1020-foot ship from top to bottom. Featured exhibits include the Ghosts and Legends of the Queen Mary, the Russian submarine Scorpion, a World War II tour and more.

The Ghosts and Legends of the Queen Mary tour explores paranormal and historic events over the last sixty years. On Halloween, the Queen Mary is home to the Terrorfest Shipwreck, which makes the Ghost and Legends experience even more fun!

The Scorpion, a Foxtrot-class Russian submarine, is moored just below the Queen Mary's bow. Visitors can tour the incredibly cramped quarters that once housed 78 crew members.

When the sun goes down, the Queen Mary’s evening attractions light up. After hours tours available including the Paranormal Shipwalk and Paranormal Investigation offer visitors an interactive ghost exploration through the many paranormal hot-spots aboard the Queen Mary. If you’re not into the paranormal experience, try the Twilight Historical Tour.

There are several different packages to choose from ranging from $15-$40 for daytime tours and $12-$75 for evening. Daytime tickets can be purchased at the Wharf ticket book at the hotel entrance. However; evening reservations must be made in advance by calling (562) 499-1666. Also, visit the Queen Mary website for more details and more area attractions.

The Queen Mary is also a full-service hotel, where guests can experience the 314 original staterooms that span three decks. For hotel rates and reservations call, (800) 437-2934.
